Smoother Contours,
Faster Recovery,
Less pain

After cosmetic surgery, the body often holds extra fluid, swelling, bruising and tightness around the operated area. Post-Surgery Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very light, specialised massage that supports lymph flow to help reduce swelling and discomfort, improve tissue softness and support your body’s natural healing. It is always used as a complement to your surgeon’s care, not a replacement, and only performed with medical clearance.

Are you experiencing-

  • General heaviness or fluid build-up post-surgery

Why MLD Matters BEFORE & AFTER Cosmetic Surgery?

MLD BEFORE SURGERY

Helps prime the lymphatic system. Evidence points that having 2-3 MLD sessions closer to the day of surgery substantially help enhance the surgical outcomes including better scar healing, cleaner skin, lesser pain and swelling.

MLD AFTER Surgery

Swelling (postoperative edema), bruising, and fibrosis are common after procedures like liposuction, facelifts, tummy tucks, and breast surgery. MLD helps in:

  • Less swelling (edema) so you feel lighter and more comfortable sooner. Clinical reviews and trials show MLD helps mobilise postoperative fluid and can reduce edema after body contouring procedures.

  • Eases bruising and tenderness by improving lymphatic clearance of blood pigments and inflammatory by-products.

  • Helps soften “lumps & bumps” (fibrosis) that can appear during recovery from liposuction/abdominoplasty; small clinical studies report reductions in tissue hardness when MLD is used (often with other therapies).

  • May lower seroma risk (fluid pockets) after abdominoplasty by promoting more efficient fluid movement—important because lymphatic pathways change after tummy-tuck.

  • Supports scar care: by reducing prolonged swelling and congestion, MLD can encourage more organised collagen lay-down for smoother scars. (Mechanism and clinical rationale discussed in aesthetic-surgery literature.)

  • Comfort boost: many patients report less pain and a calmer, “de-puffed” feeling after sessions. (Observed across multiple postoperative settings, including aesthetic surgery cohorts.)

  • Gentle, low-risk adjunct when performed by trained therapists and coordinated with your surgeon’s plan; it’s a core element of conservative lymphoedema care internationally.

Lymphatic massage benefits

Our Lymphatic system is where our daily biological battles are won or lost.

  • It holds key to longevity, your ability to fight disease, your energy and wellness.

  • Maintains strong heart by preventing clogs, blockages and other damage to heart

  • Removes cancerous, old, damaged cells

  • Gets rid of bugs, toxins

  • Reduces chronic inflammation- cause of many health conditions, low energy and ageing

  • Boosts immunity and immune response

  • Promotes gut-brain health and connection

  • Intersects all FLOW systems and with its touch points everywhere, protects organs, blood vessels and systems

  • Maintains fluid levels

  • Absorbs dietary fats

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic massage that stimulates your lymphatic system. This network of vessels and nodes is responsible for fluid balance, immune function, and waste removal.
During cosmetic, aesthetic, plastic or reconstructive surgery, local lymphatic networks are often disturbed and lymph flow is slowed causing swelling, bruising, and stiffness.
At Ayusha, we specialise in the German Technique, the gold standard in MLD, delivered by trained therapist in a soothing Holistic environment.

MLD is contraindicated in certain health conditions. Please submit the online MLD Health-check form (link available in confirmation email) prior to your appointment.

MLD Treatment Protocol

Treatment protocol varies with the type of the surgery and, from person to person.
Generic protocol for large-field surgeries, assuming Day 0 as the day of surgery is:

Day -2: One MLD Session (two days prior to surgery)

Day -1: One MLD Session (one day prior to surgery)

Day 10-14: One MLD Session (can be earlier if okayed by the Surgeon)

Day 14-18: One MLD Session

For next 2 weeks, One-Two sessions per week.

For next 2 weeks- One session per week.

For small-field surgeries and for some with large-field surgeries, lesser sessions may suffice.

For some with large-field surgeries, more sessions may be necessary.

Research & Evidence Supporting MLD

Clinical studies confirm MLD’s effectiveness in cosmetic recovery:

  • ASJ Open Forum (2023): MLD reduces swelling, fibrosis, and seromas.

  • Clinical Reports: Patients with MLD recovered in weeks vs. months without.

  • Facial Surgery Studies: Puffiness and bruising resolved significantly faster with MLD.

  • Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum review on lymphatic massage in cosmetic procedures—mechanisms and reported postoperative benefits (edema, pain, fibrosis).

  • Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (2022): lymphoscintigraphy study showing abdominoplasty changes abdominal lymph drainage pathways, informing tailored MLD.

  • Indian Journal of Plastic Surgery clinical trial: MLD (with therapeutic ultrasound) after liposuction/lipo-abdominoplasty reported improvements in pain, edema, and fibrosis over follow-up.

  • International/UK lymphology consensus: MLD is a key part of conservative lymphatic care when appropriately indicated.
