Endometriosis in Ayurveda

Endometriosis management is evolving in modern medicine. The cause is unknown and cure is not yet in sight. Diagnosis confirmation is mostly by invasive procedure. Managing symptoms and operative interventions are generally adopted approaches.

Ayurveda views Endometriosis as increase in systemic Kapha dosha in Rasa and Rakta dhatus (i.e. plasma and blood tissues)

The treatment protocol is first to understand which dosha is pushing the Kapha in endometrium. Then manage the condition by herbal formulas that treat causative doshas, burn the cellular ama (toxins), cleanse the Rasavaha srotas (channels) and heal the reproductive tissue.

Some bodywork treatments are also advised on case-to-case basis.

Endo treatment aims to:

  • Halt the spread

  • Reduce pain & other symptoms

  • Restore normal cycle

  • Endeavor to eliminate root-cause; where directly related to doshic imbalance*.

  • Rejuvenate tissue for fertility (where required)

Endometriosis, being stubborn condition, may need more patience and perseverance. As a rule of thumb, the complete treatment protocol (scroll below) will have to be followed atleast for 3 months for the results to be seen.

However, duration of treatment may vary from person to person.

*Prima facie root cause for endo is regarded as doshic imbalance, however there may be other causes at the subtle levels.

Fertility, infertility
Reproductive health

natural fertility solutions

In Ayurveda, great emphasis is placed upon ‘health of parents’ before pregnancy; especially detoxification of mother’s body prior to conception. Mother’s physical and mental health before and during pregnancy will determine actual birthing process and will influence body and mind of the child.

Preparing for conception:

  • Basic focus of therapies like Abhyanga is to strengthen and nourish the whole body, with care given at each tissue level.

  • Therapies like Shirodhara and Nabhi Puran help calm the mind, improve the receptivity and open the healing channels of the body.

  • Kati-vasti for women’s health help improve the Agni of reproductive organs while women’s health Marma therapy can help unblock the channels.

  • Therapies like Perineal steaming can be used to further aid the conception process as necessary.

  • The willingness for reproduction (crudely termed as libido) can be enhanced by working on Kamanadi - the energy channel linked with reproductive organs. This is performed as as add-on to any of above Ayurveda therapy.

  • Lack of fertility, to some extent, is related to some deficiency in all tissues. Fertility and infertility are also directly related to Shukra and Artava, seventh tissue and the treatments aim at improving the quality of that tissue with Herbs from Aphrodiasic category like Gokshura are chosen to nourish reproductive organs; aphrodisiacs under Ayurveda are not sexual stimulants.

  • Detoxification of body is performed and tissue are strengthened through a combination of herbs and dietary recommendations. This was Ayurveda makes sure that all systems in body and mind are performing optimally at the time of conception.

Menstruation &
related health issues

Acknowledging its importance, Ayurveda identifies menstruation as a separate bodily channel- Artava vaha srota.

In ancient literature there are many recommendations about female reproductive health.

By conducting pulse diagnosis as the first step, menstrual problems like Dysmenorrhea, Menorrhagia, Amenorrhea, PMS and other reproductive organ conditions are managed using traditional herbs, nutrition, lifestyle recommendations and Marma therapy where necessary.

Read how Marma Therapy is useful in treating such problems here.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)

It is a common condition with multi-faceted etiology found in our society.

Viruses, ultra processed foods, endocrine imbalances, stress, pre-existing or new disease conditions are few of the reasons of CFS.

Ayurveda views CFS as form of Dhatu-dushti (ailments of one or more of 7 tissues) caused due to dosha imbalances. The treatments identify which dosha is more prominent in causing CFS, affecting which dhatu and treat accordingly using herbal remedies. bodywork treatments, dietary recommendations and emotional therapies.

Rasayana (rejuvenation) treatment protocol is also follwoed in some cases to strengthen the tissues.

Menopause, Premenopause

These are the times when your body needs your assistance, in absence of which the symptoms become troublesome.

Depending upon the symptoms experienced, the treatment plan is developed comprising primarily of herbal formulations to alleviate the symptoms, by bringing body back in balance.

For Menopause, Ayurveda treatment focuses on gut health and gut-brain connection. By supporting the body with nourishing herbs, foods and lifestyle changes, not only menopause symptoms like mood swings, hot flashes, vaginal dryness can be kept under control but the aging process is delayed through rejuvenating bodywork therapies.

Cysts, Fibroids,

PCOS

Fibroids are very common- about two third women experience them at some stage, most common between age of 40-50 years. 90% of fibroids are harmless.

Kapha and Pitta prakriti people are more prone to develop cysts and fibroids as well as PCOS. Treatment plan is developed dependent upon which srota (channel) and dhatu (tissue) is involved.

Regular massage promotes lymphatic drainage and supplemented with diet and herbs, these can be controlled.

Depression,
Mood Swings

Depression is more common in women than men for a range of reasons, mainly as they care for others, sometimes at the cost of their own health and wellbeing.

Certain types of depression are unique to women. Pregnancy, the postpartum period, perimenopause, and the menstrual cycle are all associated with dramatic physical and hormonal changes. Certain types of depression can occur at different stages of a woman’s life.

Ayurveda offers safe herbal formulas and signature Shirodhara as effective treatments.

Urinary tract and
other infections

50-60% of women experience UTIs and some more frequently than others.

UTIs are one of the most frequent clinical bacterial infections in women, accounting for nearly 25% of all infections. 80% of UTIs have reinfections within 3 months. However, many a times, no bacterial infection is found and that’s where Ayurveda can help.

Ayurveda herbal therapies increase body’s natural immunity. Rasayana (rejuvenation) treatment protocol with herbs like Manjishtha is also followed in some cases to strengthen the tissues.

Treatments like Perineal steaming offer help in maintaining vaginal health, reducing the risks of recurrent infections. Some studies have shown promising results in some alternate therapies and Marma Therapy can offer good relief in cystitis; read case study here.

Incontinence

6 in 10 Australian women experience incontinence at some stage.

Incontinence affects quality of life. Ayurveda offers herbal solutions as well as bodywork therapies to minimize the occurrence.

Read how Marma Therapy is useful in treating such problems here.

Weight Management

A healthy weight is a necessity for good health. Being over or under weight both have their disadvantages.

Ayurveda helps to attain optimal weight by a combination of herbal remedies, fad-free dietary recommendations and body-work therapies like Udvartan.

PCOS, PCOD

6 in 10 Australian women experience incontinence at some stage.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder, affecting around 1 in 10 women of reproductive age.

Ayurveda offers herbal remedies that help manage the condition effectively.

Post-partum care

Pregnancy is a rewarding experience, however the body and mind go through a lot of changes.

Ayurveda bodywork therapies offer necessary relaxation supplemented with herbs that promote tissue recovery and rejuvenation.
